Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is
Jealous, is a Jealous God.
Exodus 34: 14
Jealousy always carries negative
connotation to most minds. The act of a jealous man seems to be selfish. Some
or perhaps most people do not want to have a jealous spouse. Because according
to them, freedom becomes too limited. The text says God is a Jealous. There was
some or perhaps many felt bad and try to question why? If He has given us
freedom because He loves us, then why He jealous? They seem to perceive God as
one whose eyes flare upon them with wrath.
The God who appeared to Moses is
Jealous was his name. That was His first disclosure of Himself when He met
Moses and made a covenant with His people at Mt. Sinai . God told Israel through Moses that He is a
jealous God, thus, avoid worshiping other gods (Exo. 19: 25; 20:5). God wants
only to be worship. This might be the hate of Satan, thus he wanted to compete
with God. It’s sounds selfish right? However, my reflection on God as jealous
sweetens my relationship with Him.
God as Jealous means a loving
God. What God wants from man is relationship. Israel had freed and redeemed
from bondage though they were sinners and stiff neck and was worthy to die. God
did not forsake them for He felt Jealous. He won’t to leave humanity without
hope. The Jealous God took them out from the possession of Satan unto Himself.
God did not forsake them lost, for without connection with God is death and
death will reign over all humanity forever. His Jealousy brings man hope and
salvation. If He has not been Jealous He has not been loved us and the world
has been neglected in its own likes and wickedness that leads to eternal fire. I
am happy that my God is Jealous; He took me out from the heart of sin unto
Himself. Now, I am saved and He keeps me from turning away. John 6: 39 states,
that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,
but raise them up at the last day."
